National Consultative Workshop on School Meal

National Consultative Workshop on School Meal

Stakeholders emphasized the critical role of nutritious school meals in improving learning, educational access, and national productivity, while also supporting child health and food security. Citing Article 26 and 51 of Nepal’s Constitution, they called for sustainable implementation and increased investment in the program.

Mr. Govinda Prasad Aryal (MoEST) noted that every dollar invested in school meals yields a fivefold return, supporting child development and family well-being. He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to the Framework’s principles—relevance, utility, coordination, partnership, commitment, and accountability.

Mr. Hari Prasad Aryal (Center for Education and Human Resource Development) shared that the Framework was approved on October 8, with an allocation of NPR 8.46 billion for 3.2 million students. He highlighted the program’s alignment with existing laws and policies and stressed the need for better organization and collaboration.

Mr. Nilkantha Dhakal (MoEST) pointed out the program’s multi-sectoral nature, requiring coordinated implementation. Representatives from NARMIN, ADCCN, MuAN, and NCRC reiterated their commitment to the initiative.

Mr. Tilottam Poudel (President, JCYCN) advocated for integrating the program with broader child-sensitive, nutritional, and environmental policies, highlighting schools as zones of peace and urging political commitment.

Mr. Ashok Khanal (National CFLG Forum) emphasized child-friendly governance and called for greater investment in child nutrition. Ms. Uma Magar (World Vision International) shared their efforts in promoting nutrition and child protection.

School principals highlighted the need for timely fund disbursement, simplified procurement, and equitable resource allocation. They also stressed the importance of sharing best practices, parental awareness, and stronger local government support.

Child club representatives echoed the importance of program monitoring and urged inclusion of children’s voices in planning and evaluation processes.

In closing, Mr. Dipak Kaphle acknowledged the valuable inputs and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring nutritious meals and quality education through collaborative action.
